Editors’ Notes

In between Tamaryn’s 2010 debut LP, The Waves, and her 2012 sophomore album, Tender New Signs, she uprooted from San Francisco, moved to Los Angeles, and bleached her brunette locks. This reinvention has extended to the music she creates with former Vue guitarist/frontman Rex John Shelverton. The Waves explored classic dream-pop anchored to a minimal wall of sound, but Tender New Signs transforms that wall into a swirling world of music. The opening song, “I’m Gone,” initially draws water from the same well as Victorialand-era Cocteau Twins and Blowback-era Swallow. As Shelverton’s guitars start to paint otherworldly soundscapes, Tamaryn’s whispery inflections blossom. This is more noticeable in the following “While You’re Sleeping (I’m Dreaming),” where her singing bares a resemblance to Toni Halliday’s gauzy coos; then the chorus finds her owning the song's tension, dipping down with Shelverton’s string-bending and holding back with a graceful restraint to let him explode into a blinding supernova of sonic bliss. “No Exits” similarly explores the give-and-take contrasts before “Violet’s in a Pool” closes on a panoramic dirge.

1991 reinvented.....

Proof that shoegaze is alive and well. She is really good at bringing a new modern 4ad sound to the table. This record is alot more polished than her previous records. Its flows effortlessly from song to song while keeping that beautiful murky reverb still intact. A must have for fans of the cocteau twins i must say.....

Nice sound.

IF you like the "shoe gaze" genre, then this a good album to start with. Relaxing yet intense and contemplative at times.

Flowery Gold!

A masterful piece of music that left with a puzzling tender new sign of the comeback of the shoegaze genre. Tamaryn delivers a vocal euphony that bears one to think of the past, present, and future. It's really those indecipherable lyrics that transcend the listeners. All in all, this is definitely the best album of 2012. Standout Tracks: I'm Gone, While You're Sleeping(I'm Dreaming), The Garden, Transcendent Blue, Violet in the Pool, and Afterlight.

Under the name Tamaryn, New Zealand native Tamaryn Brown has released material that revels in the lush atmospherics of shoegaze. Her dreamlike songwriting and soft, narcotic voice have remained the focal points. After meeting in New York in the early 2000s, Brown and creative partner Rex John Shelverton — an instrumentalist and producer from California — based themselves out of San Francisco. An EP, Led Astray Washed Ashore, as well as a handful of singles for assorted independent labels,...
