Album Review

Rosanne Cash recorded many worthwhile albums in the years after Hits 1979-1989 was released, but this compilation covers the time when Cash was a country star and reliable hitmaker — namely, the '80s. At only 12 tracks, the collection doesn't feature all of her hits, but it does contain what are arguably the cream of the crop — "No Memories Hangin' Around," "Seven Year Ache," "My Baby Thinks He's a Train," "Blue Moon with Heartache," "I Wonder," "I Don' t Know Why You Don't Want Me," "Never Be You," "Hold On," "The Way We Make a Broken Heart," "Tennessee Flat Top Box" and "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party." With a catalog as rich as Cash's, a compilation this brief can only skim the surface, but the end result is a terrifically engaging listen for the devoted and the curious alike.

the best of the best songs of Rosanne Cash

I love this Album. I also have the VHS Video of these songs. And I think I have worn out both. I have loved her music since I was a kid. Now that I am 39 I still love her style and smooth voice. A great Album for a great romantic night, or just for a relaxing moment in time.

Johnny should be proud

Not since Nancy Sinatra has a daughter so successfully emerged from the shadow of her famous father, but although Rosanne Cash covers "Tennessee Flat Top Box", her brand of country-pop-rock is distinct from Johnny Cash's. Linda Ronstadt is the most common comparison, and it's true Rosanne made shrewd use of collaborators (especially Rodney Crowell) and songwriters, just like Linda did. But Rosanne concentrated more on the pop-rock fringe of 80s country radio, while Linda mined diverse sources besides the rock-country border of pop radio. Rosanne Cash made solid albums deserving of as much attention as the songs they contributed to this compilation, yet "Hits 1979-1989" organizes just the right set of songs to summarize a career period like the best collections of Patsy Cline, Tanya Tucker, or Dolly Parton. These songs sound like they belong together, and they provide a representative array of Rosanne Cash at her commercial peak, which is what a greatest hits album is supposed to do.

Hits 1979-1989

Absolutely incredible album! Every country western fan and those who are not (like me) should have this album. Roseanne Cash is simply amazing!

The history of popular music is littered with the careers of the children of famous artists, performers who manage to carve out some small measure of success based far less on talent than on the recognition that their famous names afford them. Perhaps no greater exception to this trend was Rosanne Cash, the daughter of Johnny Cash, whose idiosyncratic and innovative music made her one of the preeminent singer/songwriters of her day. Born May 24, 1955, to her father and his first wife, Vivian Liberto,...
