iTunes Review

When this multinational modern jazz supergroup came together to record an album for ECM, Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal and U.S. drummer Jack DeJohnette had each released an excellent string of records under their own names for the label and were well aligned with the airy, impressionistic ECM aesthetic. Czech bassist Miroslav Vitous (a founder of Weather Report prior to his solo career) came from more of a fusion background, but the three meshed perfectly on this session. Amid the ethereal, almost ambient textures lies a gently surging, searching feel, as the trio swoops and glides with improvisatory grace. Rypdal consistently defies convention, making his axe sound like anything but a guitar, whether he's setting up sparkling, synthesizer-like arpeggios or floating through the tunes with a violin-like tone. Vitous's basslines alternately swell and rumble, playing musical tag with Rypdal instead of simply supplying support. And DeJohnette applies so many tonal colors in his artful approach that he defies you to consider his drums anything but a melodic instrument.

Rypdal of the Seventies

This album, originally recorded at Talent Studios in Oslo in June of 1978, is characteristic of Rypdal's style during the '70's. Wonderful stuff. Unfortunately, none of his other albums during this period are on iTMS, such as After the Rain, Odyssey, and Whenever I Seem Far Away. The music is ruminative and flowing, yet the group is extremely tight, intuitive in their machinations. And Miroslav Vitous is in classic form, having finished a great album "Magical Shepherd" just a year or so before (also not on iTMS).

Beautiful, Emotive

A beautiful and emotive jazz recording as open sounding as the vast Norwegian landscapes that I suspect may have inspired the music. The dynamics are incredible here... hushed moments building to subtle release as Rypdal's fluid guitar work seems to float (like the clouds in the cover photo) over the masterfully taut structures offered by Vitous & DeJohnette.

At his best, Jack DeJohnette is one of the most consistently inventive jazz percussionists extant. DeJohnette's style is wide-ranging, yet while capable of playing convincingly in any modern idiom, he always maintains a well-defined voice. DeJohnette has a remarkably fluid relationship to pulse. His timing is excellent; even as he pushes, pulls, and generally obscures the beat beyond recognition, a powerful sense of swing is ever-present. His tonal palette is huge as well; no drummer pays closer...
