Editors’ Notes

Combining elements of swing, ragtime, cabaret, and pop, Songs for a Sinking Ship is playful, melodramatic, sexy, and brimming with style. Despite the vintage touches and traditional songwriting style this is a thoroughly modern album filled with imaginative arrangements using piano, organ, guitar, upright bass, banjo, ukulele, accordion, and horns. Catchy, hook-heavy numbers such as “Movie Loves a Screen,” “Terrible Things,” and the irresistible “Colors” are immediate standouts, along with the wicked lyrical wit of “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” “Wow and Flutter,” and “Stop Wondering.” Of all the impressive parts on display here, and there are many, the real showstopper is Smith’s bewitching voice. Her range and tone are amazing and she’s simply a delight to hear. She can belt it out with authority, croon coyly, or deliver a melodic lovesick ballad with joyous ease. Jaunty and spirited, Songs for a Sinking Ship is a superb sophomore release.

Customer Reviews

Finally!!!! Great album!

Such an amazing album. I've seen April live several times and this girl can seriously sing. She has grown so much as a writer on each album/EP. This is a wonderful set of songs. Not fond of comparisons but if I have to I'd say a mash-up of The Andrew Sisters/Patsy Cline/Buddy Holly and Tom Waits. The Great Picture Show sounds great on the tracks too. April writes songs that tell great stories without worrying about trying to be cool or sound like newest path of Indie music. Everyone should own a copy of this. Then, go see April when she comes to your town. You'll be blown away.

Great album, amazing performer.

The album is fantastic, as is her former, but even more fantastic is her live show. I just saw them in L.A. a few nights ago and April Smith and the Great Picture Show killed it! Stole the show from Fanfarlo, who were also good, but couldn't handle going after her. She's a great performer, fantastic songs and energy and girl has pipes like not many I've heard before. I actually think she sounds better live than on her albums, and that's pretty rare. She'll be on tour for the next few months, so do yourself a favor: buy the album and check out one of her shows. Enjoy.

Instant fan

I heard April and her band compete on the "Prairie Home Companion's Battle of the Bands Talent Show" (Maryland Public Radio, WYPR 88.1) today and knew they would win the contest. As soon as I got home I fired up my computer and ordered the entire cd. I am usually one to just buy individual songs from artists but was totally impressed with this album and April's singing voice. I am an instant fan. Cheers! Look forward to seeing her and her band live in concert.
