Tetrahedron

Tetrahedron

Leisure Birds consider themselves the future of psychedelia, because they don’t lapse into the usual clichés that come with such groovy conceits. Yet, while it’s obvious they don’t do things that many psychedelic bands do, they do things that psychedelic electronica bands will do. That’s in no way a knock; it’s a matter of perspective. Tetrahedron is the duo’s third album, and it focuses energies on where psychedelic music has been and where electronic music can go. “Miner of Light” builds an interesting floating exercise while also allowing for tribal vocal patterns. “Seven Spirals” slowly enters to reveal more masterful patterns and spatial weirdness; this time it nears an Arab-tribal-religious setting. This eclectic approach—where no single genre is dismissed and sometimes more than one is running at the same time—may be the smartest and most pliable approach to take on music that by its very nature is hard to define. Once vocals make themselves somewhat clear, the sounds come together to rock out or further space out.
