iTunes Review

Toby Keith — the brand, if not the artist — took a hit when his film Beer For My Horses failed to become a runaway success. But Keith certainly shows every sign of sticking around in the Nashville music game for some time to come. 2008’s That Don’t Make Me a Bad Guy covers just about all of the bases that this resilient artist has been known for. Keith plays the rascally Romeo to the hilt on brash tracks like “God Love Her,” “Time That it Would Take,” and the title tune. He bears his romantic scars in dramatic country arias (“Lost You Anyway,” “She Never Cried in Front of Me”) and smolders with bluesy yearning in a Memphis-style setting (“Missing Me Some You”). “Hurt a Lot Worse When You Go” lets him wrap his manly, resonant tenor around a tormented confession of weakness. There are a few missteps here (most notably the tepid “Cabo San Lucas”), in general though, Toby keeps the songwriting quality high, serving up sure-fire hooks with rebel attitude. That Don’t Make Me a Bad Guy should make up for his cinematic project disappointment — and then some.

Unbelievable - Album of the year for sure

Obviously there will be many "anti-toby" fans trying to trash this cd, however, if you really sit down and listen to this start to finish you will see there are potentially 7 or 8 #1 singles on it and the whole cd is amazing. For the fast, fun-loving toby fans - That Don't Make Me A Bad Guy is perfect - its a toby anthem. Creole Woman is a banger - southern rock classic. God Love Her could end up being one of his best songs ever. Lost You Anyway is a perfect blend of a hurtful love song with beautiful guitars in the background. Missing Me Some You is a blues song, told from a soldier's point of view - real deep song - very different for toby, but very well done. Hurt A Lot Worse is a great song which is a steady build up throughout the song. Time That It Would Take is a party song, kind of similar to I Wanna Talk About Me. You Already Love me is a beautiful love song, about how love really is in real life. SHe Never Cried is already #1, no need to talk about it. Cabo San Lucas is a nice song, not my favorite - but its very islandy. I Got It For You Girl is a great finish - great lyrics and a great melody. Toby produced, wrote, and sang all the songs by himself. No other country artist does this. It is a truely classic cd and he deserves the credit.

Biography

Born: July 8, 1961 in Clinton, OK

Genre: Country

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Toby Keith spent the '90s as a solid, workmanlike country star who met with considerable chart success, yet never quite broke free of the neo-traditionalist pack to become a household name like Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson. That all changed in 2002 when he recorded "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)," a response to September 11 that became one of country's most highly charged political statements since Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee." The media furor ensured that even...
