Album Review

David Becker, whose earlier records with his trio were fusion-oriented, surprisingly plays five straight-ahead jazz standards on this set. Teamed as usual with his drummer brother Bruce Becker and bassist Tom Lilly, Becker sometimes recalls Jim Hall and Pat Metheny a little, but mostly displays his own flexible sound. His seven originals are always in the post-bop mold, featuring strong melodies, logical improvisations, and subtle surprises. All in all, this set serves as an excellent introduction to the early 21st century music of David Becker, and it is easily recommended.

Great straight-ahead jazz and fretless bass

I got to see David Becker live a few years back, and this CD was available, so I picked it up and David signed it. I didn't know how often I would obsess over this CD in the coming years. First - I just love his style and sound (but I've always been partial to jazz guitar). Yes - one should be a fan of jazz standards to sustain high expectations with this album. But there's definitely something more here - it's some of the most wonderful fretless bass guitar work available, in my opinion. The solo on Footprints, in particular, then All Blues, and Here and There, and more... If I scoured 5,000 songs for my favorite fretless bass guitar work, this album would be a quick member of that I return to Becker after years, ready (finally) to stock up on more. Thank you.
