Album Review

The charismatic singer and songwriter Johnny Boyd returns to the music scene with his new solo release titled Last Word In. The former Indigo Swing frontman has written 12 fresh compositions that pair his signature vocals with classic, life-learned themes written from an introspective angle. Johnny Boyd is in great company with guitarist Dean Parks of Joni Mitchell and Lyle Lovett fame, the chromatic harmonica player Tommy Morgan known for his work with the Beach Boys and Henry Mancini, and pianist and composer Red Young, the great writer that has penned several songs for Linda Ronstadt and Plas Johnson. Johnny Boyd uses a wide variety of instrumentation including a string orchestra, big band, gospel choir, and even a singing mariachi troupe. On "Some Eggs" and "I Don't Know What I Was Doing Then," he's a registered romantic, offering jazzed-up lyrics of love backed by a big band. His voice is butter-smooth and honey-toned, just right for these songs that hit home because of their direct honest lyrics. He gets down on the gospel-filled "Twisted" and "I Got Religion" complete with an excellent gospel choir and Red Young on Hammond organ. His bluesy vocals get a workout on the title track "Last Word In" a blues and country-flavored confessional about a rebel that finds himself in constant trouble for being a loudmouth. Boyd is a romantic crooner on the lovelorn "The One I Love" and swings on "Honey Dew." Johnny Boyd sings something for everyone: jazz, pop, country, and blues with sentimental sureness on his solo career outing. It's a sure bet for his thousands of devoted fans worldwide.

Customer Reviews

Just so smooth...

Johnny is... gees, I don't know how to explain it. He's got IT, he's got the sound that pretenders like Michael Buble wish they had... If your idea of great music is Harry Connick or Michael Buble, you might not hear what the big deal is, but Johnny is cool like Lucky Strikes and smooth like a Fred Astaire routine. Buy this album and then go back and check out Indigo Swing, too.

One of our best performers

Johnny is one of a kind and exudes charm, personality and wit. He is articulate with his music and gives completely of himself in every note of his music. He is quietly taking the jazz scene by storm. You must have his music and experience the genuine nice guy sound of Johnny Boyd. He's the best!
