iTunes Review

Recorded primarily in New Orleans with Hal Willner, Horses and High Heels is a spellbinding record, filled with songs that track the course of time. The album begins with the Gutter Twins’ “Stations” and its dark heart is given perfect voice by Faithfull’s whiskey and nicotine growl. She’s never been one to shy from a challenge and she pursues the grace of R&B with a team of New Orleans veterans for Allen Toussaint’s “Back In Baby’s Arms” that cracks open with a lean toughness.  R. B. Morris’ “That’s How Every Empire Falls” floats with a mournful undertow. Carole King’s “Goin’ Back” casts another impressive shadow in Faithfull’s catalog of watching the years pass. Her own sparkling original, “Why Did We Have to Part,” has a tight, modern sound with Faithfull’s voice in dry focus. Guests such as Lou Reed, Dr. John and the MC5’s Wayne Kramer pay their respects. But no one can upstage Faithfull. Her voice and the wisdom of her phrasings put her at center stage.

the real deal

the album we have been waiting for since almost 15 years. with exception of two country twinged songs, it is what those of us who loved "She" and the "Stars Line Up" have held our breathe waiting for 'Surf's Up' aftert hearing a few notes on a Leonard Bernstein interview with Brian on telly and having to wait and wait and then, at first, be disappointed.
This is it...

Bought This When It Came Out In Europe Months Ago. Can't Stop Listening. Love Marianne

Mix Up

Few stars of the '60s reinvented themselves as successfully as Marianne Faithfull. Coaxed into a singing career by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham in 1964, she had a big hit in both Britain and the U.S. with her debut single, the Jagger/Richards composition "As Tears Go By" (which prefaced the Stones' own version by a full year). Considerably more successful in her native land than the States, she had a series of hits in the mid-'60s that set her high, fragile voice against delicate orchestral...
