Album Review

Although it isn't as sublime as the definitive The Man and His Music, Greatest Hits still does a good job of rounding up the majority of Sam Cooke's biggest pop hits. Ironically, it doesn't have enough gospel or R&B cuts, skipping over such essentials as "Touch the Hem of His Garment," "Ain't That Good News," and "A Change Is Gonna Come" in favor of such pop hits as "Sugar Dumpling." However, it has just enough songs that aren't on The Man and His Music to make it worth exploring for fans who haven't been able to hear some of this material before, since some of these songs have been out of print for years. Nevertheless, it's targeted for the curious and the novice, and even with its omissions, Greatest Hits does provide a reasonably effective overview of his pop career.

Customer Reviews

Great comp of one of titans of soul

Sam Cooke delivered soul with a charmisa often imitated but never, ever duplicated. While James Brown was pre-Elvis with strutting and going over the top ( brilliantly, admittedly) Sam was a kind of chill and sauve that felt deep then and remains untarnished or diminished by the decades.

Good album!

Great Music

Sam was a fantastic singer, he was immortalized in the Animal House soundtrack. Southside Johnny (Having a Party)and Adele (That's it I Quit)have take his work and helped bring it to an even wider audience.

Brilliant

Sam Cooke is one of the most influential and imitated artists ever. You can hear it in the work of Paul Simon, James Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart, Steve Perry, etc. As Phil Spector would say, he made a contribution. It's something with lasting value. 95% of what comes out these days is disposable. Sorry to say.

Sam Cooke was the most important soul singer in history — he was also the inventor of soul music, and its most popular and beloved performer in both the black and white communities. Yet, those business interests didn't prevent him from being engaged...
