iTunes Review

Fans of The Allman Brothers Band have received the ultimate gift with this 37-track, six-hour collection of live performances of the band with Duane Allman in the driver’s seat. The original album At Fillmore East is a stone classic, edited from several nights in March 1971, and the deluxe issues of the album further expanded the view. But there’s nothing quite like the complete shows. This release includes the unedited performances of their two-night, four-show stand in March, while also including their June 1971 show closing out the Fillmore East after owner Bill Graham had decided to shut down the hall. Considering that Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in October 1971, these recordings are as precious as they come. The Library of Congress selected the original album for preservation for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important.” For fans, the extensive jams that hold together the various versions of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and “Whipping Post” are just as dear and important.

No digital booklet = No sell

The music on this album is of course top notch, but I will not buy archival releases/boxed sets/any album from iTunes without the liner notes.

Dear iTunes, you know HOW MUCH MONEY you’re losing with me???? The deluxe editions MUST come with the booklet!!! I WANT THE BOOKLET, no booklet no purchase. Terrible marketing and no knowledge of your demographics

Too Much Is Never Enough

No one needs me to tell them how superb this music will always be. I was a teenager when my family moved to Macon, GA, just a few short weeks before Duane Allman was killed on his motorcycle. I thought Macon was the armpit of America, and on many levels, it was. But it was home to this and a lot of other great music. In this release, we finally have the Fillmore sets as played. Arguably the best live rock album of all time, we finally now have the best live performances. I am a big fan of Apple’s music ecosystem, and I think "Mastered for iTunes” is a good thing, too. But something this good merits the full quality available. And while CD may have its shortcomings, the extra bits of lossless encodings really matter on live recordings such as these where the artistry lives in the layers, and the personality of the hall and the recording are stored in some of those subjective bits. Buy the iTunes set for your iPod or iPhone, but if you are going to play this on a real system, where you have invested money in the quality of the reproduced sound, buy the box set CD (or LP if you’re into vinyl). Your ears will thank you. Coming out of the PSAudio DirectStream DAC, the CD set is pretty amazing.

The story of the Allman Brothers Band is one of triumph, tragedy, redemption, dissolution, and more redemption. Since their beginning in the late '60s, they went from being America's single most influential band to a shell of their former self trading on past glories, to reach the 21st century resurrected as one of the most respected rock acts of their era. For the first half of the '70s, the Allman Brothers Band was the most influential rock group in America, redefining rock music and its boundaries....
