Call to Prayer

This album is beautiful, but I admit I purchased it primarily for the Adhan, or Call to Prayer. I studied abroad in southwestern Turkey for two months on an archeological excavation, and as in just about any predominantly Islamic city in the world, the Call to Prayer is sounded throughout the day for several minutes at a time. When I returned to the U.S., I went in search of a recording of the Call to Prayer because I found that I missed waking up to the a capella soloist in the morning and listening as the sun set, or hearing it echoing through the town as I went through my daily activities. In some cities where there is more than one mosque, you can hear the Call to Prayer issuing forth from them all at the same time--all in different voices and intertwining as in a round. Even if you aren't Islamic (as I'm not) or even religious, the Call to Prayer is exotically beautiful, emotional, and facilitates meditation or reflection. If you stay in any Islamic place for awhile, the song becomes like a part of the sound track of life and even though it is foreign compared to any of the literal things I associated with home, it became comforting in the way that home is. I chose the version of the Call to Prayer on this album because it is the closest I have heard to the real thing in that it most closely replicates the same emotion I associate to this song. If you really listen to this song, you'll be just a little bit closer to understanding your fellow human beings.

Great Album

Great songs of the Islamic tradition. A must have! My favorites are "If you ask me", "Tala'al Badru Alayna", "Salli Ala Muhammad", and "The Adhan". The whole album is a hit!
