iTunes Editors’ Notes

Though he is often overlooked when discussing trailblazing rockers of the ‘60s, Eric Burdon was a key player in not just one, but two beloved groups — the Animals, and War. Originally from Newcastle England, he started up with the Animals in 1962, and soon become part of the great British Invasion, alongside other acts like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, and the Kinks. With his soulful, bluesy voice, he piloted the group to the top of the charts, releasing ten albums (in the U.S.) between '62 and '68, and racking up a string of classic, decade-defining hit singles, including "The House of the Rising Sun," "San Franciscan Nights," and anti-war favorite "We Gotta Get Out of This Place." This 16-track compilation features all of those, plus other more obscure gems such as "When I Was Young" and "Monterey." Although one of his biggest hits, "Sky Pilot," is strangely absent, this is still a great mix that highlights some of his best material, while ending with the early War jam "Spill the Wine."

Customer Reviews

Not The Original Animal Hits

Be warned these Songs are not the original versions of the animals hits but re-done versions by Eric Burdon later on in his career. sounds great, very well done but stick with " The Animals - Retrospective" here on itunes.

Huh

I suspected, as this version of RISING SUN sounds note perfect but sounded too clean-which i attributed to remastering-but if i hadnt read your review-i would have let it go as the 1964 original-havent heard it for years

Not what I thought it was

I should have read the reviews before purchasing. Nowhere in the description does it say that they are re-recordings with a much older voice. Not what I though it was.

As the lead singer of the Animals, Eric Burdon was one of the British Invasion's most distinctive vocalists, with a searingly powerful blues-rock voice. When the first lineup of the group fell apart in 1966, Burdon kept the Animals' name going with various players for a few years. Usually billed as Eric Burdon & the Animals, the group was essentially Burdon's vehicle, which he used to purvey a far more psychedelic and less R&B-oriented vision. Occasionally he came up with a good second-division...
