Album Review

On The Ascension, Otep Shamaya and her cohorts experiment a bit with texture, aiming toward a sense of dynamic tension on songs like "Crooked Spoons," "Noose & Nail," and "Perfectly Flawed," ending up with some blend of post-rock and new and industrial metal. There are some other attempts here, too, such as the long balladic reach of "Invisible" and the creepy-crawler metal of "Communion." Ultimately, these tracks revisit the tried-and-true trademark Otep sound.

Customer Reviews

Ascension, indeed.

Otep's third major release offers up everything you have come to expect from this band and more. Frontoman Otep Shamaya again pours her heart and soul into her lyrics, touching on subjects that, while potentially disturbing to a more conservative crowd, are deeply personal and genuine. Powerfully delivered, passionate screams convey a level of emotion truly unique in a genre for all intents and purposes defined by emotion. Musically, this offering shows a level of technicality that is supremely above par for the genre, with complicated riffs and flowing grooves that make this album a pleasure to listen to for any fan of genuine rock and metal. This is a great step forward for Otep.

HER BEST YET!!!

Woah!! She's back and better than ever!! She and the band really did a good job making a heavy cover for Nirvana's "Breed"!! The best song on the whole album is "Confrontation"!!! MAN JUST BUY IT!!!

Album couldn't be better

this album completely topped what i thought it was going to be. Sevas tra was alright, house of secrets was even better, the acension, is the best yet, and i'm sure there will be more to come. 200% I recommend, Noose & Nail.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Otep got their start in late 2000, when singer/band namesake Otep Shamaya brought her Marilyn Manson-meets-Kim Gordon style of singing to a crew of musicians known only as Rob, Moke, and eViL j. The foursome began gigging around Los Angeles and scored a deal with Capitol solely on the strength of their live show (they'd not yet recorded a demo), releasing the Jihad EP the following year. Rumors of cannibalism and dabbling in the mystical arts helped add to their mysterious image, and they found themselves...
