Album Review

Released in 2008, Genes & Jeans is the first studio album in six years from Israeli singer/songwriter Achinoam Nini, aka Noa. Produced by longtime collaborator Gil Dor, its 17 tracks, inspired by the Yemeni music of her childhood, feature both English and Hebrew-sung tunes, and include the hit single "Dreamer." ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi

Fusion of Traditional and Modern

I am happy to see FINALLY a full length non-compilation album of Noa on iTunes. One of her greatest strengths has for me always been her blend of traditional rhythms in part from her Yemenite background and contemporary rhythms that have included jazz, pop and even Latin. Noa has combined that with always insightful , critical and hopeful lyrics sung in Hebrew and English: she does both so well and this album continues that. For me, not since Calling and somewhat on Now has she blended traditional rhythms (from her "genes" ) with modern (like the "jeans" that for her symbolize that modern, unifying look). My favorites are Waltz to the Road, Dreamer, Something has Changed, Heart and Head and Dala Dala (which she expands here from the previous version on Blue Touches Blue.) It is a very personal record - you can even hear what I think is her grandmother's voice on some interludes. Noa's uncompromising musical, lyrical and artistic vision continues on this album and hopefully iTunes will bring Noa, Calling, Blue Touches Blue and Now (all her English albums)-as well as her Hebrew "best of" to let listeners see this incredible balance of cultures and languages that she does so well.

Please more Noa (Achinoam Nini)

This is a very talented woman with a beautiful voice. I purchased "Both Sides of the Sea" last year (no longer available on iTunes?) and "Genes and Jeans" is another great example of Noa's musical ability. I'd love to see "Blue Touches Blue" with the song "Life is Beautiful" become available on iTunes.

Another great album!

I am a big fan of Noa and this group of songs does not disappoint. Noa goes back to her roots and the combination of old melodies and new songs is admirable. Her voice is spectacular in quality and I wish she was more well known in the US. The song about Jacob, Leah and Rachel is a hoot and worth the whole CD! "The Eyes of Love" is one of the most beautiful, touching songs ever- it is one of my favorites of all her songs. An amazing collection!!

Noa, also known by her given name, Achinoam Nini, was arguably Israel's most internationally renowned singer around the turn of the century. Born in Tel-Aviv in 1969 to a family of Yemeni heritage, she lived in New York from age two until age 17, at which point she returned to Israel. After serving her two years of mandatory military service, she studied music at the Rimon School, where she befriended Gil Dor, a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, piano, percussion, etc.) who would become her longtime...
