Customer Reviews

There are much better alternatives

I like a lot of tribute albums, even some where the covers veer completely from the originals. One of my alltime favorites is The Flying Lizards' cover of "Money." When I saw this on the ITMS, my first impulse was "buy album." It's rare that so much talent be used to massacre the spirit and essence of another artist. With rare exception (A Song for My Angel, I Call it Art), these covers have stripped all the style and substance from Gainsbourg's classics. If you want Gainsbourg covers, I recommend "Great Jewish Music: Serge Gainsbourg" which has phenomenal covers by Barry Adams, Mike Patton, Cibo Matto, Kramer, Medeski Martin & Wood, and sixteen others. It's not about snobbery...it's about the difference between great music and pretentious dreck.

A definiton of those who review this album negatively

(music) Snobs: n. pl. 1. Those who tend to patronize, rebuff, or ignore people regarded as social inferiors and imitate, admire, or seek association with people regarded as social superiors. 2. Those who affect an offensive air of self-satisfied superiority in matters of taste or intellect.

gambler, agitator, ladies man

serge gainsbourg was the ultimate 70s-80s rennaissance man. look him up and you will be astounded by all that he accomplished, this multi-artist comp shows how strong his writing was and the high level of respect still felt for him. portishead? wow - it's been a while. some really interesting songs with very interesting versions . . . where's my smokes?
