A deserved hit, but a bit dated

Released in 1980, "The Barbara Dickson Album" was Dickson's breakthrough onto the U.K. album charts. Though she had enjoyed hit singles before, this was her first long-player to crack the upper regions of the British chart. Produced by Alan Tarney, who also worked with Cliff Richard at the time, the album boasts an airy, heavily synthesized feel with an emphasis on sing-along hooks. This resulted in the ultra-catchy hit "January, February," along with cheerful songs like "It's Really You" and "Anytime You're Down and Out." The down side is Dickson is simply too good a singer to perform meaningless verses that chug along until the choruses hit. That said, she does excel on the ballads, particularly the haunting "Now I Don't Know" and "Can't Get By Without You." "Plane Song" is a whimsical example of Dickson's songwriting talents.
