Pick it up!

An octet of tunes offering a tasty selection of smart pop/rock. This album starts with "Beautiful Maybes", featuring Smile-era Beach Boys guitar strains transforming into hooky vocal twitters, and establishes a band that clearly hasn't been stinting on its BritPop. However, what enrichens the flavor of the most bubblegummy moments of The Bear Coat is the band's clear appreciation for the musicality of their work, demonstrated by strong crafting and energy.

Featuring Revolver-flavored treats ("Butter"), solid balladry ("The Wooler") that recalls hints of Elliot Smith, and more energetic rockers ("Broken Heart Amputation") that call out possible live potential, The Bear Coat disregards subtlety and isn't supposed to be; the fingerprints of Brian Wilson, Ronnie Lane, the Zombies and Paul McCartney are all over the record, but have no fear - it never stoops to kitsch. Jangly, eclectic and Merseybeat/Flamin' Groovies, The Bear Coat has its mojo working. Absolutely worth the pickup.

Weird, but Warm

I loved this record! First of all, I’ve never heard music like this. Yeah, it has elements of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, but The Bear Coat are able to carve out their own identity. “Butter” is probably my favorite song on the album, although the production on “Recreate the Valomilk” is absolutely spectacular. If you want music that gives you a warm feeling inside, I highly recommend this album. Five stars.
