EDITORS’ NOTES

The Originals featured some of Motown’s greatest backup singers, and they were often referred to as the label’s best-kept secret. The group's plaintive soul and sweet incantations yielded unstoppable sonic warmth between 1966 and 1976. Highlights here include “Baby I’m for Real,” “The Bells,” and “We Can Make It,” which mix the subtle street-corner doo-wop of Detroit’s old North End neighborhood with the steady hand of producer and cowriter Marvin Gaye. The Northern soul fave “Suspicion,” a Holland-Dozier-Holland rarity, is packed with the chiming verve and sugary melancholy of classic Motown. The hit “Down to Love Town” simply brings the disco down.

The Very Best of The Originals

Although iTunes has compiled most of the best songs from The Originals, those of us old enough to remember this group and had collected all of their music know that there are a lot of great songs that they produced that aren't here. Hopefully iTunes will see fit to expand their collection of this wonderful group who brought so much joy and emotion to me and my contemporaries.
