Editors’ Notes

After Memphis’ Reigning Sound took time off to write music and play with ex-Shangri-Las vocalist Mary Weiss on her solo Dangerous Game album, the band regrouped for Love and Curses, their fourth studio album in eight years. The music here shows why Reigning Sound — and particularly songwriter Greg Cartwright — was perfect for Weiss’ “comeback” record: a soulful, R&B-rooted rock sound erupts from these musicians as naturally as the sweat on their foreheads. Love and Curses is a perfect blend, with howling garage stompers, mid-weight vintage pop delights and Cartwright’s affinity for classic, R&B-flavored garage rock all coming through in equal doses. Their take on an obscure ‘60s tune, “Stick Up for Me” (by the Glass Sun), matches the power of Cartwright’s own organ-driven retro stompers “Debris” and “If I Can’t Come Back,” while “Something to Hold Onto” and “The Bells” purr with a Van Morrison soul. The musically charming “Banker and a Liar” glitters with accordion and mandolin, but a slightly sinister — and cinematic — tone colors the song.

Rhode Island Loves the Reigning Sound

Another brilliant rock n' roll record from the boys. Thank you.

One of the best bands currently making music.

Rock music with heart

This band is getting better and better with each album this one being my favorite so far.Reigning Sounds sound like a throwback to the 60's era of rock n roll but not in a contrived way at all, give a listen to "If I Cant Come Back" "Stick Up For Me' & "Break It" and hopefully if your not familiar you'll become a fan and spread the word about Greg Cartwright and his band.

Founded by Memphis blues-punk legend Greg Cartwright — a former member of the Oblivians, the Compulsive Gamblers, and '68 Comeback — Reigning Sound fuse the hot-wired energy of garage rock with the deep emotional resonance of classic soul music in a manner that suggests a cross between the early Rolling Stones and the Sonics. Featuring Cartwright on vocals and guitar, Jeremy Scott on bass, Greg Roberson on drums, and Alex Greene on keyboards and guitar, Reigning Sound made their recorded...
