Customer Reviews

Compelling, powerful, hypnotic soul

I'm compelled to write a review mostly because it's shameful to let two reviewers set a 3-and-a-half-star bar for some of the most fantastic instrumental soul music ever to come out of Memphis. While best known for "Green Onions," Booker T. Jones, Al Jackson, "Duck" Dunn, and Steve "Colonel" Cropper were the backbone of the studio sound for Stax-Volt Records during the 60's. Booker T. and the MGs almost single-handedly crafted the "Memphis Sound" behind hits by Carla and Rufus Thomas, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, and others. While the Rhino collection is more completist, this is a fine introduction to the Atlantic years and is highly recommended for any music lover.

Cool Jams

This is a pretty cool CD. It gets old though. Its kind of got this cool funk late 60-70's dive innercity bar feel. You know what I mean, the red leather seats with the gold buttons on them. That old school funky feel. Its cool.. but I can't listen to it for too long. The first 3 songs sound exactly the same. But Green Onions is a sick jam, so is Soul Dressing. Jazzy Funk. If you like these cats check out Medeski, Martin and Wood. Same organ sound. Now those guys are where its at.. but this is one to own if you want to see where they got their musical influance.

As the house band at Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, Booker T. & the MG's may have been the single greatest factor in the lasting value of that label's soul music, not to mention Southern soul as a whole. Their tight, impeccable grooves could be heard on classic hits by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas, Albert King, and Sam & Dave, and for that reason alone, they would deserve their subsequent induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But in addition to their formidable skills as...
