Album Review

The Best of Jerry Jeff Walker is a concise ten-track collection of tunes from his years on the MCA label, though "Mr. Bojangles" appears as a live recording. Otherwise, it's a straightforward greatest-hits compilation, thereby making it a fine record for those wishing an overview of his career.

Sparse collection - but pay no mind to the clown

There are better JJW collections out there, Great Gonzos for one, though that collection also lacks "Pi**in' in the Wind" which is a must have. Please don't listen to this BGBGBozo - he's apparently got the musical taste of a coffee filter. All voices don't have to be American Idol perfect or even Dale Watson "perfect" - the character in JJW's (and Hank III's) voices more than make up for their supposed lack of vocal chops. And JJ's one of a kind. Truckers rule!

Good for Jerry Jeff beginners

A good album for those wanting a sampling of some classic Jerry Jeff Walker. Nice mix of uptempo and slow songs. Great version of Leavin' Texas, and Hill Country Rain. In my opinion, also the best version of L.A. Freeway. Can't go wrong with this album.

Great Introduction for the First Time Jerry Jeff Listener

BGBGB clearly doesn't know anything about Jerry Jeff. This is a great compilation...that said, it is not a studio album. Works like "Ridin High" and "Contrary to Ordinary" soothe the soul of the "true" Jackie Jack fan. The sound quality may not be the greatest here... but nonetheless, it is classic Jerry Jeff. Maybe "BGBGB" should look into the new Jonas Brothers disc...I think its more his taste! - S.G.

Jerry Jeff Walker is strongly associated with the progressive ("outlaw") country scene that centered around Austin, TX, in the 1970s and included such figures as Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Billy Joe Shaver, the Lost Gonzo Band, Waylon Jennings, and Townes Van Zandt. Ironically, however, Walker is not a native Texan. He was born Ronald Clyde Crosby in upstate New York and recorded his first several albums while living in New York City. He didn't move to Austin until 1971, but he's remained a major...
