Some of Portland's Finest

The five stars was for the original lineup of Jack Ely, and everyone, just a couple of guys from my neck of the woods, trying to make a break. The original lineup made "Louie Louie" (The only hit for the group, until it became popular and Lynn Easton stabbed Ely in the back, copyrighting the band name and declaring himself the owner of the group, as well as lead singer) Had Easton not done that, there's no telling how big the group might've become. So, essentially, the five stars goes to the group when Jack Ely was the lead. As for Easton's version, I give it a one.

Louie Louie #1 Rock Song of 1963!

Great collection of vintage Rock n roll songs. Louie Louie is The Kingsmen at their best. This song is Rock n Roll in it's purest form, an absolute classic for 1963 despite lyrics that are hard to understand. (And just to be clear on an earlier review concerning so called dinosaurs, 8 Track Player Technology did not arrive for the aforementioned dinosaurs until the early 1970's!)

WOW ! Look out Rhino Records the other labels are starting to get the picture dinosaurs of the 50's and 60's want to hear the rockers they used to listen to on their 8 track tape players in their '65 Chevy "Super Sports" again with the best "Re-mastered Sound" available today. This new compilation is what all lovers of "Garage Bands" have been waiting for. How to go what ever label put this CD out, makes my day! Great to be able to hear the last instrumental bars on "Money (That's What I Want)" without a radio DJ talking over them. Turn it up and rock the Frat house !!! It's Party Time Again!!! Toga ! Toga ! Toga ! "Louie Louie" Lives!

It's unfair to call the Kingsmen "one-hit wonders," as they did have hits besides "Louie, Louie" (even if they're not well remembered today), but very few bands in the history of rock & roll managed to get as much mileage from a single song as they did. Overlapping the rowdy beer-bust bellow of frat rock with the anyone-can-do-it sneer of garage rock, the Kingsmen were unapologetically a party band, and decades after the band was largely a memory, their version of "Louie, Louie" stubbornly refused...
