tasty, slick British highbrow pop

"The Big Idea" is a bit of a classic recording by the esteemed synth wizard and musical genius Dave Stewart, and his wife and collaborator on vocals, the mighty Barb Gaskin. I've followed Stewart since his prog days w/ Bruford and National Health, and I've been a huge fan ever since. Although some of the synth sounds and lavish production have that late 80's vibe, the inspiration and sheer musical brilliance are still powerfully new. This was a hit record in America on an adult alternative jazz/rock/pop station The Wave back in the early nineties. For lovers of smart, classy pop music, you should be impressed.

One of the surprise hits of the early 80s was 1981’s UK number 1 cover version of Leslie Gore’s ‘It’s My Party’ by two former members of several UK progressive bands. Dave Stewart (b. 30 December 1950, Waterloo, London, England) was originally organist in Uriel in late 1967 (with Steve Hillage). When Hillage left, Stewart and Uriel’s other members Clive Brooks and Mont Campbell formed Egg who released a couple of albums in the late 60s and early 70s.
