Album Review

Bloodthirsty Lovers chieftain Dave Shouse is no stranger to indie rock, having spent the '90s with noise-rockers the Grifters and Those Bastard Souls. A record that was originally intended for Those Bastard Souls but became increasingly unfitting for that project as Shouse found more interest in synthesizers, the debut of Bloodthirsty Lovers is relatively subdued. Drummer Paul Taylor (a member of the bluesy North Mississippi Allstars) and keyboardist Thom Krupski join Shouse for this unearthly delectation, which bestows post-rock with an appreciation for melody. It's also indie rock with atmosphere and signs of jazz and funk ("Transgression #9," for example, features a faux-brass section). Shouse's nearly falsetto vocals add outer-space lyrics such as "black holes swallow lightning" on "1000 Light Years From Home" before the trio leaves listeners with the instrumental "Waking up in a Good Place," which could be transmissions from deep within the indie rock galaxy.
