iTunes Review

As a member of Drive-By Truckers, Jason Isbell was the underused secret weapon, a top-notch songwriter who had to wait his turn behind the band's two leading frontmen. On his own, Isbell mines similar territory but now has a place to show it off, and his second solo album in three years adds his solid road band that turn these songs (that reflect his Southern roots) into full-fledged rockers, ballads and country weepers with a professionalism that's efficient but never bloodless. "However Long" addresses the state of the nation after years of terror fears and military aggression with a drive directly copped from the Rolling Stones, while the Memphis Stax and Muscle Shoals R&B of Isbell's youth can be heard in full force on the horn-punctuated "No Choice In the Matter." "The Blue," "Seven-Mile Island" and "Sunstroke" fulfill the inner rocker and aching romantic, while "Cigarettes and Wine" finds the back porch for an exorcism.

I'm happy with it

This album flows well, and is full of heart, all of things we'd expect from Jason. Jimbo's base playing is very good as well. The only regret is I can't get enough of Jason's guitar in 11 songs. Sunstroke is a phenomenal song. This is one of the south's brightest bands. Can't wait for the Memphis show.

Rolling Stone magazine gave this cd 3 out of 4 stars but i say 4 stars all the way. I had my mind set that Jason's first cd, Sirens of The Ditch, could not be beat. But i guess i was wrong. This is a great album with beautiful lyrics. And with me being a Muscle Shoals Alabama boy myself, i absolutly love the new album. Seven mile Island is a great song and has an Allman-Bro feel to it. So pop this in your Cd player or your IPOD and grab some Jack D. and a little something to smoke and enjoy this album. Rock on Jason!

Finally some real MUSIC! This album is long awaited in my book! No digital mixes or remixes! No overdubs or porno rap hip-hop lyrics, just straight good o'le fashion hand created, string and drum music. It’s been a long time coming! The music is crafted with blues and rock-n-roll roots with just a touch of spice! Vocals are just ripped in-between the grooves. MTV won’t pick this up because its real music! BUY this one now you will not be disappointed! If you love the Black Crowes or Dylan you will not be disappointed!
