What great memories this album brings back...NYC, WBLS, WKTU, Frankie Crocker, 12" Vinyl singles that seemed to go on forever. How nice it is to have this piece of work in digital format to enjoy for another 28 years (has it really been that long!!!)? Worth it just to have the remixes of The Boss and It's My House.

A Masterpiece

Working again with the great Ashford & Simpson, Miss Ross sings with the power and passion never heard before or after in any of her recorded work. The material is strong from beginning to end, as are Ross' vocals. One listen to "Once in the Morning," or "I'm in the World," and you'll realize how special this project is. This album is essential to any Ross fan, old or new. Though her follow-up album, "diana," was her biggest seller, "The Boss" is simply the best of Diana Ross' career.

Ross is the Boss

"The Boss" reunited Diana Ross with Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson who produced and wrote much of the material on Ross' first solo album. Ross is obviously comfortable with this colaboration as her singing here is the most emotional and confident she's ever sounded. Ashford and Simpson supply Ross with a set that mixes disco grooves (this was recorded in 1979) and smooth ballads, all solid songs, no filler. The reissue adds the extended remixes of "It's My House" and "The Boss".

As a solo artist, Diana Ross is one of the most successful female singers of the rock era. If you factor in her work as the lead singer of the Supremes in the 1960s, she may be the most successful. With her friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin, Ross formed the Primettes vocal quartet in 1959. In 1960, they were signed to local Motown Records, changing their name to the Supremes in 1961. Martin then left, and the group continued as a trio. Over the next eight years, the Supremes...
