Fantastic Sophomore Effort

Sure, they’ve released a few EPs and a live album in addition to their first full-length album (which happens to contain my all-time favorite song, “Catch Me”), but this is officially their second full-length release, and it’s just as strong as their debut. I have to admit, their debut is in my top 50 albums of all-time (and I’ve been a music fan since the 60s), but it’s exhausting. This album is just as powerful, but a little shorter, and a bit more accessible. When first listening to The Jezabels, it’s natural to feel that one song blends into the next. But repeated listening lets the individual songs breath on their own. They definitely have a “sound.” A *wall* of sound, actually. Although similar to their previous material, there is definite slow progression. HIGHLY recommended. First great release of 2014. I just wish they received more airplay than they have so far. They deserve it.

*** Update ***

Upon many MANY more listenings (I’m addicted), I have to say that this album is a LOT different from their debut, but is equally epic. Definitely more mainstream, but still anthemic and powerful. Hayley’s vocals, while still wonderful, are much clearer (although I still can’t figure out what she means a lot of the time). She seems a lot less bashful in her enunciation. Love it.

Fans, please request your local radio stations, and SiriusXM’s AltNation to play The Jezabels. AltNation played them a tiny bit a few years ago, but has since abandoned them. I just don’t get it.

This album is wonderful. Their melodic vibes are captivating, exciting and exuberant. Nik lays down the beat. Sam shreds a tasty lick on the axe, and Heather takes us on a journey with her magical synth key expertise. Then there is Haley. Haley's voice becomes more and more familiar the more you listen to it. Her voice is so beautiful and entrancing I can't even explain. This is the best album right now and quite possibly of all time.

Formed: 2007 in Sydney, Australia

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Australian quartet the Jezabels shimmer with their anthemic, empowering approach to indie pop. Comprising singer Hayley Mary, guitarist Samuel Lockwood, pianist/keyboardist Heather Shannon, and drummer Nik Kaloper, the group formed in 2007 after meeting at the University of Sydney, though Mary and Lockwood knew each other previously, having both grown up in Byron Bay. Taking a socially aware stance, the band name derived from Mary's perspective that Bible character Jezebel was misunderstood or misrepresented....
