Album Review

Composed by Henry Jackman (Kick-Ass, Man on a Ledge, Monsters vs. Aliens), the soundtrack for kinetic Russian director Timur Bekmambetov's highly stylized film adaptation of author Seth Graham-Smith's genre mash-up novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter fuses explosive action cues and traditional atmospheric horror passages onto a gritty Old West backbone that suggests an alternative metal rendering of an Ennio Morricone-penned spaghetti Western score. Lincoln works best on selections like "Power Comes from Truth" and "The Gettysburg Address," both of which utilize the grand sweep of expansive, Aaron Copland/John Barry-inspired symphonic Americana with a sort of grim, realistic determination that belies the completely absurd notion of the 16th President of the United States wielding a silver axe in Matrix-inspired slow motion, while the filthy heads of an invading vampire horde pile up around him.

This score...

...However epic it is, it's incomplete...

There are probably many cues missing from this soundtrack, but the one scene that I enjoyed the music from the most, was the "Waltz of Death" scene when Abe first meets Adam. But there's absolutely NO track with that music on here! Henry Jackman, and any others who contributed... I am disappointed.

You all may be fooled, but I'm not. The soundtrack was pretty good, however lazy. When a composer begins to climax in a score it should be continuous. Not less than a minute. Look at Jackman's other scores. Like many of our other greats today, he's getting into that mode of whatever.

Henry Jackman: Vampire Hunter

Henry Jackman, a brilliant composer with mind-altering music. I became a fan of his work from Man On A Ledge. Then soon after I bought my first animated album for his work on Puss In Boots. I've started looking for his name in more movies lately than any other composer I know of. Jackman has made a huge impact on me in such a short amount of time. He really goes big, and makes every composition he has done, something you have never heard before. Vampires beware. Henry Jackman is in town, and he delivers!
