Progressive neo-lounge, or space age pop redux?

Com Ed did it right, as far as I'm concerned--& what was/is "it?" Call it neo-lounge, or "retro"space age pop--no single label covers their whole spectrum, which is to their credit. Also going for them were(obviously)thorough research into their antecedents, whose work they used as a jumping-off point rather than merely copying...& copious chops brought into the fray(tho it's not about the chops, it's about the atmosphere)as well as harmonic imagination & sophistication. I've been listening to the 1st & final albums a lot, & now hearing this 1, I can see how it is the connective tissue between the bookends, & "The Impossible World" isn't quite such a bolt out of the blue(tho much more lushly produced, & outward bound). There actually is...a progression! & if it's kinda too bad there isn't more, these 3 albums certainly stand as a testament, which listeners who enjoy the music of Esquivel, Martin Denny, Les Baxter & The 3 Suns (et al.)should certainly sample. I 'specially enjoy "Mudhead," which is probably the closest thing to a jam C.E. ever recorded(yet still carefully, even meticulously arranged). Their lyrics aren't always the greatest, but they get extra points for ambiance, so...5 stars!

What to do if you've been slogging away in the rock underground for a decade to slight critical acclaim without making any appreciable artistic or commercial headway? In the mold of David Johansen/Buster Poindexter, the band Christmas decided to retool themselves as lounge lizards. On their debut album, the Providence, RI, group played cocktail jazz, exotica, torch ballads, and B-movie spy/guitar themes. To complete their transformation, the band adopted ice cream-colored tuxedoes in their live performances;...
