Glacier Face is the musical alter ego of American-born visual artist and musician Wesley Berg, who began this particular project while a resident at Iceland's Baer Art Center in 2011. Inspired by the world’s natural beauty, Berg has also created music in Finland, taking in that country’s landscapes, and recorded musical tributes to the naturalist John Muir. He’s an artist clearly devoted to the natural world and the role environment plays in the creative process. I Believe is a pastoral, soothing collection of airy, spacious songs composed mostly with synths and feathery percussion. Berg’s pleasing and boyish vocals, occasional acoustic guitars, and solemn, Hammond-style organ complement the tracks' slow-moving, glassy textures. Berg’s warm voice is alluring, and there are undeniable hooks embedded in these songs, making them more akin to radio-friendly pop than one might suspect. The title track’s swaying, slippery rhythm and Berg’s repeated refrain (“Hey, hey, I believe you”) could have come from a Broken Bells session. I Believe You casts a subtle spell on the listener, with sweet and delicate melodies that burrow gently, almost without notice. Lovely.
