Album Review

Following the overtly childlike/childish tweeness of their debut album Dragons Are the New Pink, Julius Airwave return with a more mature, serious album that's unfortunately lacking in personality. The City the Forest is faceless indie rock that bites from just about every interesting band of the previous five years, as well as Coldplay. Seriously, the whole early-U2-plus-piano sound of the centerpiece track "Nannerl" is so overtly Coldplay-like that the most we can hope is that it's some kind of deadpan parody of Chris Martin's crew and not in fact the baldfaced stylistic plagiarism it comes across as. That severe low point aside, The City the Forest is basically inoffensive. Singer/songwriter Rick Colado doesn't seem to have many original ideas, and close inspection of the songs further reveals their flaws, but under casual listening, Julius Airwave sound like a minor entry in the post-Flaming Lips indie-psych canon, somewhere well beneath Grandaddy and the Dears. The only question is whether that's enough.

Customer Reviews

That album review is soooo far off!

This album is wonderful. Each song takes you on a fantastic journey from the city, to flying over some majestic fairytale world. I'm tired of people always saying that just because there's a piano and an electric guitar that it's a coldplay rip-off. Don't let the review fool you, check some of the songs out and sure you'll get caught up in this band just like I did! I bet The Edge and Bono both have this album on their U2 edition iPods lol!

GREAT band.

Saw this band live in Orlando opening for Spoon. Absolutely amazing...

finally it's on itunes, i was wondering how long it'd take

first found this album in may in the only independent record store around (yes, actuall records are sold there) and immediatly picked it up. usualy it's very hard for new music to catch my eye. so i tryed a few songs at the store, and this band is amazing. truely. i love you jules... rock on oh, & happy 7 months since the album came out!
