Album Review

This collection features a sampling of four Tony Bennett Christmas albums — Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album, Our Favorite Things, Christmas with Tony Bennett, and A Swingin’ Christmas — released between 1968 and 2008. Highlights include such traditional holiday standards as "Silver Bells," "Silent Night," and "Winter Wonderland," plus “Christmas in Herald Square” taken from the album The Playground. This is a nice addition to any Christmas collection.

Christmas with Tony

In my opinion Christmas music with a Jazz go hand in hand. Who better to set the Holiday mood than Tony Bennett. If you’re looking for something new, I suggest “Coal In Your Stocking This Year” by Tyler Barham.

Tony's Ultimate Christmas Collection

This amazing single-disc collects tracks from Tony's various appearances on Christmas albums as a guest, select tracks from his 2001 collaboration with Hallmark Cards and the London Symphony Orchestra, his recent 2008 album with the Count Basie Orchestra and his first Christmas album from 1968. "What Child Is This" was previously unreleased. What I like about this cd is that it pulls together the very best of Tony's holiday recordings, he re-recorded some of his 1968 selections for the 2008 Basie project and the better versions of those two projects are selected. The sequencing of the songs is excellent, no abrupt change from the secular to the non-secular and the overall mastering is terrific, the 1968 tracks get the sonic enhancement they deserve. Overall this is a comprehensive tidy authoritative collection of Tony's holiday recordings, well done.

Tony Bennett's career has enjoyed three distinct phases, each of them very successful. In the early '50s, he scored a series of major hits that made him one of the most popular recording artists of the time. In the early '60s, he mounted a comeback as more of an adult-album seller. And from the mid-'80s on, he achieved renewed popularity with generations of listeners who hadn't been born when he first appeared. This, however, defines Bennett more in terms of marketing than music. He would probably...
