Bob Dylan recorded nine albums in his first decade. His self-titled 1962 debut featured blues and folk songs and just two self-penned originals: the Woody Guthrie–like “Talkin’ New York” and the Guthrie tribute “Song to Woody.” It was Dylan’s second album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, that showed his sudden stunning abilities as a topical songwriter (“Blowin’ in the Wind”) with a tough romantic streak (“Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”). Dylan's topical writing peaked with The Times They Are A-Changin’. Personal, imagistic writing took form on Another Side of Bob Dylan. His transition to electric rock was in evidence on 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home, even as its second side featured four acoustic classics. It was 1965’s other album, Highway 61 Revisited, that forged the electric attack and 1966’s double album Blonde on Blonde that broke all barriers. Then a motorcycle crash reset Dylan’s focus, and in late 1967 he reappeared with the ghostly small-band acoustic set John Wesley Harding. He finished the '60s most enigmatically with the country-influenced Nashville Skyline and the mild hit “Lay Lady Lay.”
