Acquired taste...but brilliant!

Doveman's voice is definitely one that takes some getting used to. His soft whispering vocals can sometimes catch first-time listeners by surprise. But this album, which is filled with high profile cameos (including Norah Jones, Glen Hansard, Matt Berninger (of The National), and Martha Wainwright) is a masterpiece from beginning to end. Every listen brings a new appreciation of delicacy in which this album was put together. Standout tracks include "Breathing Out," "The Best Thing" and "Angel's Share." Enjoy!

Yin to Tom Waits' Yang

I learned about Doveman last year when I heard them being interviewed by Steve Lillywhite on NPR about covering The Footloose Soundtrack which I found it to be a masterful and understated interpretation. Still I wondered what any original material would be like. I find this record moving, honest and original --which is what matters most to me. Check out: Breathing Out, Angel's Share & Tigers. You won't be disappointed.

Perfectly unique

With Thomas Bartlett being twentysomething and having only released a few albums, it's hard to dub anything he's done thus far a masterpiece. That doesn't mean this isn't a superlative work of art. For any other artist farther along in their career, a masterpiece this most certainly could be. That said, this is not an album that any other artist could have released. It's music seemingly cultivated in a vacuum. It's so subtly unique and non-referential, it feels like Mr. Bartlett is pursuing a trajectory that no one else has before. In that sense, the name of the album is a lesson in irony, since it seems the only thing to which he is conforming is his own musical point of view.

Although keyboardist Thomas Bartlett cut his teeth as a sideman for Bebel Gilberto, the Swell Season, the National, and David Byrne, he also earned his own accolades as the frontman of Doveman. Bartlett founded the project in 2005 with the release of The Acrobat, a moody debut that highlighted his whispered vocals and ambient, jazz-influenced arrangements. He returned to the solo game two years later, focusing heavily on instrumental numbers with the sophomore effort With My Left Hand I Raise the...
