Album Review

Originally released on Twin/Tone in 1990 but reissued on Caroline's Red Decibel subsidiary in 1993 (possibly because Dave Pirner of then-hot Soul Asylum had produced the album), the self-titled debut by the Coup de Grace is a mixture of hardcore thrash and speed metal. The two styles fit together so well — after all, Metallica and the Melvins are just two fruits from the same Blue Cheer-meets-Black Sabbath tree — that it's at times impossible to distinguish which elements of which songs come from which antecedent. Unfortunately, that's about the most entertainment one is likely to mine out of this release. The songs are forgettable collections of recycled thrash riffs played with an acceptable level of intensity, but zero personality; the lyrics are primarily clichés, delivered by guitarist Steve Wresh in a distracted, offhand way that saps them of any interest they might have otherwise had. Diehard thrash fans might find the Coup de Grace mildly diverting, but not much more.

Absolutely crippling !!!!

Hailing from Minneapolis this quartet offer a diverse, compelling style of metal that retains several touch points yet has a stamp of individuality all over it. Basically The Coup De Grace offer a seamless blend of styles that can appeal to Thrashers and Rockers alike. The package opens with the thoughtful 'Daylight Dawning', and from then on each song has it's own identity. The Coup nail down their speed quotient with 'Bombs Away' and 'Til the Bitter End' while songs like 'All of the Above' and 'Me myself and I' show they're are a band who insist on taking form and bending it to their own liking. Not only can they do it in the studio, but they do it live. KKKK

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Minneapolis, MN

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Minneapolis metal band the Coup de Grace got more publicity from having their eponymous 1990 debut album produced by Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner than for the rather mundane limp-wristed thrash music it contained. Featuring vocalist Jimmy Coup (aka James Mecherle), guitarist Steve Wresh, bassist Kurt Gillispie, and drummer Chris Westling, the band persisted in frustrating anonymity for five more years, finally issuing a sophomore album in 1995 entitled The Art of Survival...
