iTunes Review

Back in the 1980s, Stryper raised a storm of controversy by harnessing the power of heavy metal in the service of Christian ministry. Nearly 30 years later, the band returns to the wellspring of its musical inspiration on The Covering, an album’s worth of classic metal cover tunes. Michael Sweet and his band mates reach all the way back to the early ‘70s for these tracks and render them with the blazing fervor they deserve. Songs with spiritual implications — like Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son” and Black Sabbath’s “Heaven and Hell” — feel like natural choices. Party-hearty anthems like KISS’ “Shout It Out Loud” and Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” likewise fit the life-affirming spirit that the band has always maintained. Whatever the song, Stryper displays a sure sense of bombastic showmanship, spearheaded by Sweet’s piercing vocal heroics and punctuated by Oz Fox’s fret-frying guitar riffage. Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” is a particularly good vehicle for the band’s grandiose flair. The Covering’s sole original tune, “God,” is an arena-rocking reminder of Stryper’s unshakable commitment to its faith.

Un "Freakin" Believable

One of the most underated bands of the 80's.

Worth buying

With a number of covers coming from several bands, it's no surprise that Stryper has joined in and produced some of their own covers. However, unlike the competition Stryper handled these covers respectfully, adding their own twist to things while, trying to preserve the original sound of the songs. In this release, stryper pulls out the strings with wailing guitar solos and screams that are sure to please all Stryper fans as well as those faithful to the songs covered. Alot went into this, and it truly is a treat to listen to, over and over again. For those questioning their faith, they couldn't be stronger than ever, ending the album with "God", quite possibly one of their strongest songs ever written. Don't be hippocrites, just buy, listen, and enjoy.

Heavy metal has been associated with ol' Beelzebub ever since its inception, but a few acts took the opposite route and put their Christian beliefs in hard rocking songs, such as Stryper. Formed in Orange County, California, in 1983, the group was originally known as Roxx Regime, and consisted of singer/guitarist/main songwriter Michael Sweet, drummer Robert Sweet, lead guitarist Oz Fox, and bassist Timothy Gaines. It wasn't until the group changed its name to Stryper (which stood for "Salvation...
