Editors’ Notes

A skilled producer who's been bubbling in the underground since the late ‘90s, DJ Frane has a gift for making mostly instrumental albums that perfectly blend raw funk, sleepy new age, prog-rock, mellow jazz, classic hip-hop, and pretty much everything in between. With a wide-ranging sonic style akin to early DJ Shadow or Lovage-era Automator (without biting either of them), his mesmerizing concoctions aren't really meant for the club — unless you mean the medicinal marijuana club, and in that case, they're ideal. Journey to the Planet of Birds is the third edition of his "Beats To Blaze To" series, and quite possibly his best work to date. "If I Had Wings" combines a rugged breakbeat with grinding guitar licks, vintage analog synths, and an old Warren G sample, while "Take a Look" fuses chimes, harpsichords, sinister keys, birdcalls, and hard-hitting snares. All of the 17 tracks blend together, both literally and figuratively, resulting in the rare album that is best listened to from start to finish. The aural equivalent of thumbing through an Audubon Field Guide after ten bong hits.

Great CD

Solid DJ here folks. Definately grab this CD.

Truly a journey

This album follows Frane's unique formula of his other albums such as Electronic Garden of Delight, and really makes you feel like your traveling to a strange yet familiar place, like a dream. A good mix of acid rock sampling, excellent scratching, and spacey ambient sounds. Great album that holds true to its theme.

beats to blaze to!!!

dj frane is just plain amazing! i found his music by accidient and just one listen had me fiending for more! frane's music embodies a more updated version of the trip-hop genre, similiar to the dj's of the 90's, only frane doesnt rely entirely on vinyl. his style of slighty heavy percussion with self-created piano riffs and layers of instrumental samples, mesh well with his cuts and scratched in vocals for each songs chorus. His albums are a long extended mixtape, with one song blending into the next, creating a musical trip from start to finish.

Frane creates an album every 5 years or so? which i imagine is how long the guy must dig ofr to find vinyl samples that are all based on the sole idea of each album [for instance garden of delight has continuous vocal samples referring to gardens]. not to mention the guy spins for a label called 'beats to blaze to', which is almost a subliminal message as to the mindstate needed before partaking the journey into frane's world.
