Album Review

At its best, Asia was the majestic, arena-sized tonic to the increasingly goofy end of the new wave movement, a last gasp from the near dormant volcano called prog rock. That said, it's impossible to roll down the car windows and crank "Only Time Will Tell," "Don't Cry," or "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" without attracting the furrowed eyebrows and sarcastic air drumming of the general public. Geffen's The Definitive Collection features all of the aforementioned hits, as well as "Heat of the Moment," "Go," "Sole Survivor," and "Voice of America," making it a fine choice for the average fan, but those looking to dig deeper into the void should search out the peerless two-disc Gold collection, which has everything but a miniature Paiste Gong.

Another rehashing

Universal seem to have an endless recycling policy when it comes to their vast catalogue. Asia are no exception. The same old songs real Asia fans already have, slewn together for the tour (I think the merchandise table at the show had this on CD, but it's cheaper here). The remix of "Go" is not new. It was on a rare maxi-single (I have it on UK 12") in 1985, but never on an official CD or download. The reunited Asia have yet to find time in the studio, but they plan on it. Most other UMe heritage acts are unwilling to reunite or are no longer with us, so these best of packages lure in new fans and completists alike.

This is worth it for the Go Remix but that is about it.

Stuff you have, but Go Remix is new

Hopefully these guys will decide to do some new material as well.

When they appeared in the early '80s, Asia seemed to be a holdover from the '70s, when supergroups and self-important progressive rockers reigned supreme. Featuring members of such seminal art rock bands as King Crimson (John Wetton), Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Carl Palmer), and Yes (Steve Howe), as well as Geoff Downes from the Buggles, Asia did feature stretches of indulgent instrumentals on their records. However, they also could be surprisingly poppy, and that is what brought them to the top of...
