iTunes Review

It's tough to get closer to the core of country-rock than this collection. The genre's patron saint, Gram Parsons, cut two albums fronting The Flying Burrito Brothers in between leaving The Byrds and going solo, and the "Cosmic American Music" he created with his band of former Byrds and future Eagles has inspired generations of alt-country artists. All the tracks from the first two Burrito albums (and then some) are here, from the aching love ballad "Hot Burrito #1" to the barroom rocker "Lazy Day." Soul was a crucial Burrito ingredient too, exemplified by shimmering, twangy covers of the James Carr hit "Dark End of the Street" and the Aretha Franklin classic "Do Right Woman."

Great Stuff

If you're inclinde to get this - and by all means, you should be becaus it's fantastic, you might want to check out the anthology for a few more dollars. It's worth the cost for the additional songs. These are exceptionally crafted songs, and country to the core... but with the spirit that anything from the Laurel Canyon area carried in the '60s. The Burritos are the undisputed champions of Southern California country, as is evidenced here. Masterworks from an underrated band - a must have for fans of the Byrds, the Dead, NRPS, CSN and all other groups influenced by country music. Give it a spin.

Though the band's glory days were brief, they left behind a small body of work that proved vastly influential both in rock and country. The Flying Burrito Brothers reunited later in the '70s, albeit without their founding members Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, and continued performing and recording in...
