This! That's what.

Anybody picking up a record with a member of a specific band on it expecting to sound like that band is probably a reeree.

That being said, this album is a revelation. Mantler's compositions are haunting and challenging, and his trumpet playing is lyrical and downright gorgeous. He is ably supported by sympathetic musicians that not only includes Pink Floyd's Nick Mason, but also Don Preston from the original Mothers of Invention, Rick Fenn from 10cc and John Greaves from the English avant-rock ensemble Henry Cow on drums, keys, guitar and bass respectively.

The real star of the show, however is Jack Bruce, the singer and bassist for Cream. Here he has surrendered bass duties to Greaves, to be strictly the vocalist, and sing he does.

The lyrics are settings of poems by playwright Samuel Beckett and prose by the writer and illustrator Edward Gorey, and the music that buoys them captures their tenor beautifully.
