iTunes Review

The Virginia shoegaze-pop trio Eternal Summers switch it up with their third studio album, The Drop Beneath. Producer Doug Gillard of Guided by Voices and Nada Surf and engineer Louie Lino (also of Nada Surf) worked with the group in Austin, Texas; they concocted a variety of arrangements that bring out the band’s many strengths. Singer/guitarist Nicole Yun emphasizes a retro girl-group sound on songs like “Keep Me Away” and “Until the Day I Have Won,” while turning to the indie rock side with shades of sugary guitar pop on “100” and a heavier shoegaze phasing guitar flush on “Gouge.” For a leaner, new wave pulse without walls of impenetrable sound, “Never Enough” works off that summer feeling that Jonathan Richman swore would haunt us the rest of our lives. Touches of The Cure, R.E.M., Lush, Slowdive, Belle & Sebastian, and Helium all surface in these largely innocent-sounding indie pop songs.

Listened to the album while in the car tonight, and I love it. The mixing is stellar, and I love how every instrument blends into the sound, while still being distinguishable from one another. A little (just a little!) influence from Sonic Youth is what I heard, and I love the tone of the album as a whole. Sample the songs, and if you like what you hear, get the album.

One of those rare albums. Not just a compilation of songs, but an Album. Takes you places within its duration of play. An encapsulation of emotion and thought enabled by exceptional musicality and lyricism.

Specializing in taut, hook-filled post-rock/no wave-inspired pop nuggets that alternate between dreamy and cacophonous, the duo released a self-titled EP in 2009, followed by Eternal Summers' full-length Kanine...
