David Newman does such an amazing job in this score. Even without watching the movie, the score provides a very adventurous, yet emotional feel. In my opinion, its a very underrated movie. But David Newman really brings the masked comic-book hero to life. Buy the entire album. It'll be a well-spent ten dollars.
While the movie has turned into something of a cult classic, I don't think there are many people who will disagree that it really didn't do anything to enhance the credibility of the whole superhero genre. The story was sub par, the dialogue almost derisively campy, and it was ultimately a wide departure from it's source material. Two things really end up saving this movie from being total crap: Billy Zane and the score.
Billy Zane had a clear reverence for this character and it really shows as he commits to every line, no matter how thick with camp. And he truly pulled off the superhero build like few other actors have been able to. But it's the movie's soundtrack that really sticks with me.
It's not very extensive, but David Newman understands that when translating a character from comic to screen, a good theme will add immeasurable amounts of credibility to the whole. Without John Williams, we may never have believed Christopher Reeve could fly. Danny Elfman helped sell the darkness of Tim Burton's vision of Batman. Here, Newman created a unique yet evocative theme song that really represents the Ghost Who Walks. Well over a decade after watching this film, this theme always stuck with me. I looked for the score for this movie for years, always having that melody playing in the back of my head. I'm elated to finally add it to my collection.
