Album Review

Few modern-era Hollywood composers are more effective at writing period scores than George Fenton, and Memphis Belle represents his most complete and stirring work to date — not only does the music conjure the heroism and danger of World War II in vivid detail, but its artful appropriation of '40s pop and swing idioms perfectly captures the musical spirit of the times as well. Fenton instills Memphis Belle with a sweeping romanticism that perfectly complements the music's classical sensibilities — its adventure themes and motifs positively soar, while its jazzy accents communicate the boyishness and recklessness of the young men who took to the skies to combat the Axis forces. Best of all, Memphis Belle is emotional but never manipulative — Fenton respects his music and his listeners too much to rely on cheap tricks.

Lack of One Great Redition of Danny Boy

This does not have Harry Connick Jr.'s Big Band Version of Danny Boy, which IMO is the best version ever performed!

Great soundtrack from a Great movie

This music embodies the classic movie about the unsung heroes of WWII, the bombers and their crews. The music reflects the era very well and is graceful while at the same time reflecting the fierceness of the largest airborne conflict in history. You will not regret this purchase, especially if you've seen the movie, or are a WWII aviation buff. This ranks right up there with my Band of Brothers OST.

Heroic Music

Great music to a great movie. The music gives energy to such a heroic period of history.

He began composing in 1975, and soon penned music for such British theatre directors as Peter Gill, Howard Davies, Adrian Noble, and Richard Eyre. His efforts paid off in a big way, as he won respective BAFTA and Ivor Novello awards for his work. But his greatest accomplishments were yet to come. Starting in 1983, Fenton successfully made the transition from theatre to movies, receiving...
