Album Review

Carrie Newcomer has a very distinct voice, one that you either like or don't like. Even if you are in the latter category, remember that the same has been said of folks like Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello and give Newcomer the props she deserves as a songwriter. Not that she's Dylan. She's actually pretty well lined up with Mary Chapin Carpenter, as she does come up with some pretty stunning lyrical turns. Hers is the world of truly grounded reality, of day-to-day simple beauty, of honesty in thought, word, and deed. Somehow that's not surprising, considering she calls Indiana her home. Her talent lies in how she transforms those small things into poetry that reveals the hidden depths therein. Newcomer calls upon her listeners to join her in the revelry as she gets straight to the point and lives her "life like it don't get much better." The reason behind this is quite simply put: "Most of our prisons are of our own makin'." It's a kinder, gentler take on "just do it." As for the musicianship on The Gathering of Spirits, it lacks nothing, with Alison Krauss harmonizing with her usual twangy soul on the title track.

Not for everyone

Carrie has a unique range and uses it quite well, but, you either love it or not. She reminds me of Karen Carpenter both lyrically and vocally, you truly need to just sit down, put your headphones on, sip a glass of wine and listen with your eyes closed to really get this album. I would like to hear more from her. I think she has her finger on the heartbeat of Hometown America.

She's Got It

If you're looking for intelligently, beautifully crafted songs that speak to what's of importance in life, listen to Carrie Newcomer's music. She's got it. It goes instantly to your deeper self, and makes you think and makes you feel. Not in a maudlin way, just in a very good way that makes you glad she's been inspired to perform her music and in a way you're grateful to have your heart challenged and refreshed by listening to it. Yes, her music is this good.

It might just touch your soul

Carrie's music strikes a chord that reminds me how truly blessed life can be. She's is a breath of fresh air in a world that seems to cater to the worst humanity has to offer. Roll down the windows and go for a drive in the country, or sit on the back porch in the shade with a glass of iced tea - this album can take you there.
