Album Review

In Ruins craft the kind of atmospheric black metal that is brutal, yet beautiful. Each song on Four Seasons of Grey is a sweeping epic of dark grandeur, marrying the aggression and tortured howls of classic early-'80s death metal with the more textured gothic romanticism of mid-'90s Scandinavian black metal. Misty nylon string guitar arpeggios and lacy pseudo-classical harpsichord segments balance out the distorted power riffage to evoke a sensual, albeit slightly satanic, experience.

Customer Reviews

Top Notch melodic, black, death, doom whatnot...

This one has some serious sentimental value for me, purchased it blind back in 2000 and was totally blown away by the melody, atmosphere and nearly unhinged, emotional vocal performance. The desperation of the vocals combined with the melodic lead guitar sucked me in right away and it has been a favorite ever since. Any fan of the melodic strains of the genres in my title should not miss this gem of an underrated album.

Pure Nostalgia!

For $7 you can't beat that. I remember picking this up back in '99 or 2000. Don't know what I did with it, but I'm sure happy to have found it again here. Remember back when it wasn't so easy to find good music and the online music thing was just starting to get rolling? This was a random gem I came across back then. The review of it being great melodic death/black metal is accurate.

Working on his own with a sequencer, Michael laid the sonic foundations for In Ruins with an EP of textural, gothic black metal that was released under the moniker Black Thorns in 1996. The demo, which bred the influence of classic brutal metal (Venom, Celtic Frost) with more classically tilted European metal atmospherics,...
