iTunes Review

The Red Hot Organization has been raising money and awareness for AIDS/HIV relief since 1989 with compilations like 1990's Red Hot and Blue and 1993's No Alternative; Dark Was the Night marks its 20th release. Following an alchemic collaboration by Dirty Projectors and David Byrne, the Books and Jose Gonzales unveil a gorgeous version of Nick Drake's "Cello Song" that blends big wooden cello tones with soft, sequenced beats. Feist's angelic voice raises the bar high as she and Ben Gibbard give Vashti Bunyan's "Train Song" some otherworldly harmonies. Kronos Quartet's antiquated-sounding title track utilizes old-timey production in an earnest homage to Blind Willie Johnson. Likewise, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings don't stray too far from Shuggie Otis' original recipe on the soulfully mellow "Inspiration Information." Even Cat Power gets rootsy with Dirty Delta Blues on a southern steeped take of "Amazing Grace." But not all that glitters is old. Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch bequeath a beautiful rendition of Bright Eyes' "Lua" from 2004's I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.

Solid Album, but buy on Amazon to get DRM Free

This is a very solid album. Standout tracks include The National, Yeasayer, Arcade Fire, New Pornographers, Yo Lo Tengo and Conor Oberst, although there really isn't any track that's not worth it. I was very disappointed to see that this compilation has DRM especially as someone pointed out below these artists are all (for the most part) anti-DRM. Do yourself a favor and buy it on AmazonMP3.com. It's also only$6.00 cheaper there.

Buy the entire album, its for a good cause.

Profits of this double CD go to the Red Hot Organization which is an HIV/AIDS awareness charity. But if that's not your thing, buy the entire CD for the amazing Sufjan Stevens' song (preview doesn't do it justice) along with all the other great artists.

A great deal.

There's so much great stuff (32 cuts) here that you can't go wrong. This is also a good introduction to a lot of excellent indie groups that some of you may not know about. You can get the actual CD through "Deep Discount.com" for $11.98. They are an excellent source for CD's and have no shipping charges.
