Album Review

The act of switching to Columbia did not have a substantial impact upon Jean-Luc Ponty — not yet, at least — for his debut with the label found him mining the repeating, sequencer-driven lode that he was exploring while on Atlantic. But there are two areas where there is a difference: the material is superior to that of Fables, more memorable and immediately winning in melodic and arpeggiated content, and the sound quality is considerably improved over that of much of his Atlantic output. The rhythm section of Fables returns, with Pat Thomi replacing Scott Henderson on guitar, and as before, they take a definite back seat to their leader's violins, synthesizers and electronic devices. Other points of note: "Between Sea and Sky" has a slightly Jamaican feel, and the lovely "Introspective Perceptions" (another of Ponty's notoriously portentous word pairings) is exactly what the title says it is, appropriately recorded solo. ~ Richard S. Man this great

Listening to this today prompted me to write a review as I have all of Jean Luc Ponty cds on my iPod and the music is timeless and beautiful and though I love all genres of music something about jazz and fusion that make me sit back and reflect on life and the track Between Sea And Sky takes me there in thought of all those who have come and gone in my life in a very positive light…Peace And Love To All

Finally on iTunes!

More and more, I'm finding my childhood favorites brought to iTunes and I've been spending money like crazy! My father bought this circa 1986 when the instruments and arrangements were far ahead of their time. It's one of those records which sounded so excellent on a modern turntable that repurchasing on CD was never really an issue. Now that all but my Apple TV and receiver is packed away in storage, I'm inclined to purchase on iTunes. As to the music-- upbeat electronic jazz with at least 4 amazing cuts which take my mind to the clouds and places suggested on the cover art.

It has been a long, fascinating odyssey for Jean-Luc Ponty, who started out as a straight jazz violinist only to become a pioneer of the electric violin in jazz-rock in the '70s and an inspired manipulator of sequencers and synthesizers in the '80s. At first merely amplifying his violin in order to be heard, he switched over to electric violin and augmented it with devices that were associated with electric guitarists and keyboardists, like Echoplex machines, distortion boxes, phase shifters, and...
