Album Review

If by this point you have developed a jones for Saccharine Trust's post-hardcore semi-improvisatory jazz-rock, then this CD — over an hour of live recordings covering a period of eight years — should find a place in your collection. For a vault-clearing compilation, there is very little bullsh*t and lots of inspired bashing and wailing, making this a great purchase for lovers of the arcane and far-out. At its best, Past Lives is astonishing, a hint of how good, warts and all, this band could be.

"ARTCORE" AND PROUD OF IT

Saccharine Trust are one of the truly great post harcore bands and this collection showcases their ability to mix bohemian(esque) poetry, the enrgy and intensity or hardcore, and improvisational musicianship of jazz and funk all within the same show. I saw them recently and they still have the chops even as middle aged men.

Prime example of LA punk scene in 80's

Saccharine trust is a prime example of the progressive punk rock that was being played in Los Angeles at clubs like the "Hong Kong". Good solid musicianship, experimental, and intelligent. Still ahead of it's time.

Bands like the Minutemen, Universal Congress Of, and especially Saccharine Trust gleefully tossed in chunks of '70s progressive rock, avant-garde jazz, and funky kicks and pops into a stew already percolating with heavy(ish) metal riffing, shouted vocals,...
