iTunes Review

The creation of former Cop Shoot Cop bassist Tod A., New York-based Firewater explore an unusual and eclectic terrain where a dark Nick Cave noir groove meshes with vague and deliberate nods toward world music accentuated by lyrics that pull few punches. Tod A. spent three years traveling through India, Thailand, Indonesia, Turkey and Pakistan and the album reflects his difficult journey where he experienced first-hand political unrest and personal illness. While his singing is pure gonzo rock posturing along the lines of Greg Dulli and his Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers, Tod A. is far more engaged with the outside world. With Firewater drummer-producer Tamir Muskat (also of Balkan Beat Box) driving the backing tracks, The Golden Hour makes for an inspired coupling. “Borneo” addresses frustration with the oil-driven economy and geo-politics of 2008. “This Is My Life” shares the spotlight with a jaunty rhythm section.  “Paradise,” “A Place Not So Unkind,” and “Feels Like the End of the World” pulse with sobering reality in their resilient marches.

This Hour is Gold

A Must Buy For A Firewater Fan. If you have never heard the band before, this would be as good of a jump off point as any. Think "world music" lead by a punk rocker that listened to too much Tom Waits in the 80's. Think Zappa took a trip to Jerusalem and fused Yiddish/Hasidic Folk music with his Mothers of Invention. The story about this cd is an important part of it, and you should look it up on their myspace page or on youtube. Quick preview: Tod A. (the lead singer) left the USA after bush got re-elected and moved to the middle east where he hap-hazardly recorded with local musicians on his laptop computer. He comes back to the states years later with his new album ready to go, only to find his record label is no longer there, they went under. It is a treat for the ears and worth the wait. Where as their previous albums always felt like they were recorded in the russian winter, the heat of the middle east pours over the speakers with the first notes of the golden hour. Put this in when the air breaks and all you have is a fan, and a cold six-pack that is gonna get warm if you don't drink 'em quick.

Wonderfully strange sounds from a suitcase

The Golden Hour is a most exotic affair, but still distinctly Firewater in its art-punk embrace of cross-cultural influences taken from leader Tod A's gypsy-like journeys into new territories. Like all of the band's records, the compositions create a weirdly wonderful brand of circus rock: high-wire tangos featuring eccentric rock stylings that are challenging and yet immediately captivating. Theatrical. Peculiar. Brilliant.

13 songs that prove Firewater never lets up! I waited 8 months to get my copy, and it was worth it! With a flare of Bollywood and a sneering contempt of US politics and policy, Tod A. gives more proof of his music mastery. Just listen to "Hey Clown" or "This is My Life" INCREDIBLE!
